On Wednesday 21st May Ormiston Herman Academy was officially opened with the help of a special visitor, his worship, the Mayor of Great Yarmouth Mr John Burroughs. Other important visitors who attended the academy’s launch assembly included executive principal of Venture, Nicole McCartney, and principal, Simon Gilbert-Barnham.

Preparations for this important event started with pupils getting involved in creating a large wall display in the main hall based on the well-known story ‘The Wizard of Oz’: this theme was chosen to show the similar journey children will take, as they travel through different stages in the academy.Every child  has written their name on a paper brick, which have been used to build ‘The Yellow Brick Road’, pupils also took part in self-portraits, which have also been added to the wonderful display. During the assembly pupils sang songs they had been practising, including “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” A group of pupils performed a piece of drama which Miss S. King, (Year 3 teacher), had produced.Speeches were made by the Mayor and  Mrs S. Morris, (chair of govenors), who commended the children on their outstanding singing and acting. To close the celebratory assembly, each class was presented with a cake, that the academy’s kitchen staff had kindly baked.

During the afternoon each child participated in a kite-making session, which parents were invited to come along to. The special launch day ended with pupils, staff and parents congregating on the academy field, where they thoroughly enjoyed flying their kites.

Principal, Mrs K. Rutherford said:”It has been a fantastic day. We  have all embraced our new beginning and are very proud of the journey that we have made. I know that our journey will continue to be successful because of the excellent support and determination of our staff, pupils and parents.”
